Welcome to AnesisRO! To help the transition of players both new and old to Ragnarok Online, we've provided this guide with all the information that you'll need to get started in Rune Midgard!

Creating a Character

When you first log in, you will be presented with a Character Select window.

Each square is a placeholder for a character whose information will be displayed below. Click on arrows at the left and right of the character slots or use the keyboard ← and → arrows to scroll through your characters. You may have 9 characters total per account. The numbers below the character boxes (1/3, 2/3 or 3/3) indicate the page number.

To create a character, select a character slot and press the Enter key, click on the "make" button, or simply double-click on it. This will bring up the character creation screen where you can name your character, customize the character's hairstyle by pressing the arrows around his or her head, and adjust your starting stats. More hairstyles and hair colors will be available at the Stylist after you enter the game. (See: Stats/Status Points/what should we name this page?)

When you are happy with your character, press the Enter key or click on the "OK" button. Note: You might receive a message that says "Character name already exists." If so, the character creation window will remember the stats and hairstyle you wanted but not your hair color. Make sure the hair color is correct, and try another name. It would probably be better to try to make up a completely new and unique name rather than add symbols just in case the player with the original name is still active, but that is up to you.

Once you have successfully created a character, you will see it in the character slot you chose. If you decide you don't like the character anymore, you can press the "del" button at the bottom left and enter your e-mail address to delete the character. Be very careful that you delete the correct character!

To log in, simply select the character and press Enter, click on the "OK" button, or just double-click on the character. You should appear in the Novice Training Grounds!

Novice Training Grounds

Welcome to the Novice Training Grounds! Here, you can talk to Shion multiple times for introductory information about the game interface. It is highly recommended that you speak to all of the Category:NPCs in this area if you are absolutely new to Ragnarok Online. Afterward, you will want to head east across the nearby bridge and enter the building surrounded by guards. Once inside, you can sell your knife and cotton shirt in order to purchase new equipment from the Novice Shop. Note: you will receive most of these items for free either in the Novice Training Grounds tutorial or from Rennard much later on.

For more information about stats, like HP, SP, DEF, STR, DEX, and DEF, see: Stats

Item Price Bonus Notes
Novice False Eggshell 1 Z +80 SP, DEF: 3 This item is honestly not necessary unless you decide to talk to Rennard. That will come later, and there are numerous Novice Shops in the game, so it is not necessary to buy it now.
Tattered Novice Ninja Suit 1 Z +700 HP, DEF: 4 Incredibly useful for its hit point bonus. You will have much more health, meaning you will survive longer without healing.
Novice Guard 1 Z +400 HP, DEF: 3 Again, very useful for the HP bonus.
Novice Main-Gauche 1 Z +60 ATK, +20 HIT, ATK: 45 The ATK bonus will help you deal more damage and HIT bonus will help your attacks land on more evasive enemies. This will help you more successfully deal damage to enemies so you can level up faster.
Novice Slippers 1 Z DEF: 2 Also comes in handy when speaking to Rennard later on.
Somber Novice Hood 1 Z Reduces Neutral property damage by 20%, DEF: 2 This garment will reduce the amount of neutral damage you take, which means most monsters' normal attacks, and should help you live longer.
Novice Breastplate [1] 89,000 Z +2000 HP, DEF: 4 Cannot afford this item.
Novice Armlet [1] 400 Z None Cannot afford this item.

Do note that the Novice Breastplate and Novice Armlet both have a [1] when highlighting them. Also, right-clicking on them to view their item details shows four squares at the bottom: one is white, three are gray. That means that this item can hold one monster card, which will be explained later.

When you are ready for your training, talk to the Receptionist and tell him your name. He will provide you with four options:

Apply for training.
This will send you to the rest of the Novice Training Grounds tutorial.
Direct access to Ragnarok Online.
If you feel confident in your knowledge and skills, you may skip the tutorial and immediately join the other players around Payon Dungeon.
Training Grounds Introduction.
The receptionist will explain the Training Grounds tutorial process to help you decide if you would like to try it.
I need a moment to think.
Cancels the menu.

Once you have gone through and completed the tutorial, you will be given the option to take a job personality test. If you decide to do this, you may be sent to one of several maps to begin the job quest for one of the following jobs:

Swordman - Mage - Archer - Acolyte - Merchant - Thief

Otherwise, you will be sent to Payon Dungeon.

Payon Dungeon

Congratulations! You've made it out of the Novice Training Grounds, and now you can explore the world of Ragnarok Online and meet other players! Payon Dungeon is the cave directly west of you and a great place for Novices and first class jobs (see section below) to begin more serious leveling. Zombies and Poporings are stronger than the other monsters in the dungeon, so be careful - you may want to start with Familiars and Skeletons. Familiars and Zombies are aggressive, meaning they will chase and attack you when they see you. Be sure to pick up items to sell for zeny or to give to Rennard for his quests!

Quests:

First Job Change

Once you reach job level 10, you can change to your first job! This can either be achieved instantly through the Job Changer or through your proper job change quest. Taking the extra effort to complete your job change quest will give you one of the special Beginner's Weapons to help make leveling faster and easier.
If you use the Job Changer NPC, you will not receive a free Beginner's Weapon, but you may complete an additional quest to earn one.

Note: Unless you are planning to become a Super Novice, you will not be able to equip any of the Novice equipment after you change your job. This means you may may wish to take advantage of the Novice equipment bonuses for as long as possible before changing your job, particularly if you want to change into the Mage, Archer, Acolyte, or Merchant classes. This will allow you to have a stronger character and more stats to put into survival.

Swordman - Mage - Archer - Acolyte - Merchant - Thief
Super Novice - Ninja - Gunslinger - Taekwon Boy & Girl

If you become an Archer, bow Thief, or Gunslinger, you may need to recalibrate your character immediately by spending 1000 zeny at the Stat/Skill Reset NPC to Reset Stats to set more Dex for ranged damage in your status menu (Alt + Q). While you're in the area, you can visit the Stylist to customize your character's appearance. Don't confuse the Stylist for Anne the ex-Stylist, however, as she sends you to maps that you will likely be unable to handle as of yet.

Remember to use the Stat/Skill Reset NPC any time you would like to try a new build! Mages, Acolytes, and magical Ninjas may want to reset their stats after they have gained a few job levels and learned new magical skills that need Int for damage and Dex for a faster cast time. Swordman, Merchant, dagger/sword Thief, and Taekwon Boys and Girls may want to focus on Str for attack power, Dex for a better hit rate, and either Vit for more health or Agi for higher evasion. Luk is most likely going to be impractical save for certain skills when you are a much higher level and have collected specialized equipment.

More Leveling

Recommended leveling areas after Payon Dungeon:
Orc Dungeon
Toy Factory
Field north of Lighthalzen or south of Einbroch
Field north of Einbroch for Mages with fire spells or Archers with fire arrows Glast Heim Prison via Anne the ex-Stylist for Mages with Soul Strike or fire spells, Archers with silver arrows, and Acolytes who hold the shift key in order to use Heal offensively on undead monsters

Your Second Job Change

You can change your job again once you reach job level 40, but you may want to bring your job level all the way up to 50 for extra skill points that will stay with you when you job change. It's especially recommended for Mages, Acolytes, and any PvP or War of Emperium characters to wait until job lv. 50 in order to unlock more skills on their next jobs.
